LANDSCAPE GARDEN, WAREGEM

Waregem was the last project of my first year. The plot is situated outside the centre of the city of Waregem, on the rural edge. The owners asked for a modern take with more rectilinear architecture close to the house and an extensively managed part further away from their home.

The straight lines in the design are mostly made by the hedges. I wanted to create a very modest floorplan where the children can use their imagination. By making a couple of rooms within the garden, they have the opportuniteit to play football, hide-and-seek, etc. When their children grow up, there is room for the requested swimming pool.

There are 3 main visual axes. I inserted a couple of long-walks on these sightlines so I can put the focus on these lines in the design. It also stresses the length of the garden plot.

Last but not least, I did create a protected seating opportunity at the northwest of the house. By adding a hedge and some small multi-trunk trees, I tried to make a microclimate. Thanks to all the plants, it is more protected from wind and rain. I hope I achieved my goal to make it enjoyable during the warm summer and cold winter.

MASTER VISION

Beside the design, we were also asked to make a master vision of the property behind the garden. The owners are thinking of purchasing this plot. They are currently talking to the farmer who owns it, if he is willing to sell. There are three main areas that I will explain here.

The first is the orchard in the middle. By continuing the hedges, I want to join the two lots into one. In this way I create a unity. Because I use fruit trees, the owners can get proceeds from their own garden.

Secondly, I continue the neighbouring bush to create a larger 'forest'. Because the ground is wetter on this terrain, we can work with 'wet nature'. By 'wet nature' I mean vegetation that demands a wetter condition to grow prosper. This type of vegetation is rare in Flanders so it is more than worthwhile to add it in the master vision.

I also use a decking path so everybody can walk through the forest without disturbing any fauna or flora. Another advantage is the fact that one will not have wet feet.

Last, I wanted to make a multipurpose field. You can choose to mow it or not. If you want to organise a neighbours party or a little festival, there is enough place to install a tent (or two). By mowing little areas in the tall grass, you can realize little 'rooms' where you can have a picnic, chill with some friends, dance, etc.
