PRIVATE GARDEN, ZWIJNDRECHT

My very first project in my bachelor Garden and Landscape Architecture. The task was to design a private garden in the town of Zwijndrecht, Belgium. We could only use straight lines. Organic shapes and curves were prohibited.

The surface is around 600 square metres with on the end a pathway, a little stream and nice big Oak trees. The European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) was already present. It would have been a shame to remove this nice big tree so I kept it.

Because one of the owners is an architect, I wanted to add something architectural. There is a very important sight through the house, so I extended this with a so-called Gallery. The Gallery is a combination of numberous arches insinuating a pathway and nicely framing the view.

The pavement on the lower end of the house (on the floorplan), is one step higher than the surrounding pavement. By raising up the pavement at the living room level, my intention was to enlarge the living room and include the outdoor space.

PLANTING

We needed to compose a 'planting plan' with all the required plants information and the place they should go.

This is necessary for the contractor so that he/she can purchase the needed plants and know where they should end up.

SCALE MODEL OF THE GARDEN

For another course, we had to make a scale model of our design. As for the materials, we were allowed to use whatever we wanted. The task was to create a simplified version of the garden and not a realistic image with lifelike trees and such.

I'm very satisfied with the end product. I worked with brown cardboard, copper wire and green accent colours. I think it is cohesive and nicely portraited.
