THE INCLUSIVE STAIRCASE, CAMPUS BIJLOKE - GHENT

A different assignment than usual. For the Design Lab Techniques II, we had to design an inclusive staircase for a public space. We needed to choose an excisting location where the current stairs are not inclusive yet. By 'inclusive' I mean that all people should be able to use the stairs in the same way without having to put in extra effort. Thus blind people, the elderly, people in wheelchairs, etc. must therefore be able to independently climb the stairs and enter the building without a detour or suchlike.

I chose one of the stairs at our campus at the Bijloke in Ghent. I use the stairs a lot but I don't think it's inclusive. People in wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking, have to make a long detour to get in and that's not appropriate.

By combinating stairs with multiple slopes, everyone can use it.
